Questions to ask before hiring a Tampa deportation lawyer

When you’re hiring a Tampa deportation lawyer, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure that you’re getting the right attorney. At Tampa Immigration Law Center, it’s our duty to make sure you have proper representation if you’re facing deportation. We’ve assembled seven questions that you should be asking before you hire an immigration lawyer.

Have you seen a case like mine?

Not all deportation cases are the same. However, this doesn’t mean that your lawyer hasn’t seen a case that’s similar to yours. If your situation is so unique that your prospective attorney has never seen it, then you might want to keep shopping around. Our law office has worked with immigrants since 2011 so we have years of experience that we can use to help with your case.

Do you specialize in immigration law?

Immigration laws are complicated and nuanced. You don’t want to hire a deportation lawyer who spends the majority of their week working in tax law or divorce court. Someone who specializes in immigration and deportation will be the best choice to represent you and fight your case.

What’s your strategy for my case?

You should know everything that’s going into your case. Make sure that your lawyer is presenting you with their strategy in your case. If it’s something that you don’t feel comfortable with, you don’t have to get on board. What’s more, if a prospective deportation lawyer has a difficult time coming up with a strategy, you definitely need to head in the opposite direction and find someone new.

Do you have references?

Don’t be afraid to ask a prospective attorney for references. You can speak with people who have worked within the legal field as well as former clients. Take it a step further even by doing your own research into a deportation attorney and read reviews online. Most people aren’t afraid to leave bad reviews online if they’ve had a good experience so you’re sure to get candid information about the lawyer you’re considering hiring. Find out what people are saying about a lawyer before you hire them.

How much do you charge?

Make sure that your deportation lawyer is upfront with costs. While your attorney might work hard for you and do a great job fighting your case against deportation, you don’t want to spend the rest of your life paying off your lawyer bills. Your lawyer should have your best interests in mind when it comes to fighting your case and after.

When can you get started?

There’s a delicate balance when looking for the right answer to this question. If a lawyer seems overly eager to get started on your case as though business is slow, you might be speaking with someone who isn’t in high demand and won’t do a good job on your case. Conversely, an attorney who’s too busy to get started on your case or has a heavy workload might not be able to provide you with the time or attention that you need. This can be problematic if you’re under a time crunch to get into court. In this case, you can be the judge and decide what’s right for you.
